Vehicle breakdowns happen β flat tires, dead batteries, overheating engines, locked-out keys. The difference between a bad situation and a dangerous one usually comes down to what you do in the first few minutes. Here's what to do when your vehicle gives up on you.
Get Off the Road If You Can
If your vehicle is still moving even a little, ease over to the shoulder, an exit ramp, or a parking lot. The further off the active travel lanes you can get, the safer you are. If you're on a multi-lane highway, the right shoulder is preferable to the left because traffic on the left flies by faster and closer.
Turn On Your Hazard Lights
Hazards on, immediately. They tell other drivers something is wrong and to give you space. Keep them on the entire time you're stopped, even if your battery is weak β a flat battery from running hazards is a far better problem than getting rear-ended.
Stay In the Vehicle If You're On a Highway
On busy highways, especially at night or in bad weather, you're safer inside the vehicle with your seatbelt on. People standing next to disabled cars on the interstate get hit far too often. If you absolutely must get out, exit on the side away from traffic and stand well back from the road.
