How Often Should You Really Change Your Oil?

If you grew up hearing 'change your oil every 3,000 miles,' you're not alone. That number was solid advice in the 1970s and 80s, when conventional oils broke down faster and engines were less efficient. Today's engines and oils are different β€” and changing oil too often costs you money without adding any benefit.

What Modern Vehicles Actually Need

Most newer vehicles using conventional oil can go 5,000 to 7,500 miles between changes. Synthetic blend usually stretches to 7,500. Full synthetic oil often goes 10,000 to 15,000 miles, depending on the vehicle. Your owner's manual is the authoritative answer for your specific vehicle β€” it's worth a look.

The Catch: How You Drive Matters

Manufacturer recommendations assume normal driving. If most of your driving falls under what's called 'severe service,' you need shorter intervals. Severe service includes:

  • Frequent short trips under 10 miles, especially in cold weather
  • Stop-and-go traffic most of the time
  • Towing or carrying heavy loads
  • Driving in extreme heat or cold consistently
  • Lots of dirt or dust in the air (rural roads, construction zones)

If two or more of those describe you, cut your interval roughly in half from the manufacturer's recommendation.

Conventional vs. Synthetic β€” What's the Difference

Conventional oil is refined directly from crude oil. It works fine but breaks down faster under heat. Synthetic oil is engineered for consistency β€” it handles heat better, flows better at cold startup, and lasts longer between changes. For most drivers, the cost difference is offset by the longer interval.

Don't Just Watch the Mileage

Most modern vehicles have an oil life monitoring system. It tracks how you actually drive and tells you when the oil really needs to be changed. Trust the monitor over a fixed mileage number. If the monitor says 30%, you have time. If it says 10%, schedule the service.

Signs You're Overdue

  • Oil looks dark and thick on the dipstick
  • Engine sounds louder or rougher than normal
  • Oil pressure warning light
  • Burnt oil smell from under the hood
