5 Maintenance Habits That Keep a Small Fleet Running

If you've got a handful of work trucks, vans, or commercial vehicles keeping your business running, downtime is expensive. Every day a truck is out of service is a day you can't service customers. A few maintenance habits go a long way toward keeping the fleet on the road.

1. Stick to a Real Maintenance Schedule

Commercial vehicles work harder than personal vehicles. They idle longer, carry more weight, drive more miles, and rarely cool down between trips. That means oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections need to happen on schedule β€” not whenever someone remembers. Build maintenance intervals into your operations calendar so they don't slip.

2. Track Each Vehicle Individually

A simple spreadsheet β€” or even a notebook β€” for each vehicle goes a long way. Track the date and mileage of every oil change, tire rotation, brake service, and major repair. Patterns show up in the data. If three of your trucks need brake work at 60,000 miles, you'll know to pre-schedule the fourth.

3. Pre-Trip Walkarounds

DOT requires this for some commercial vehicles, and it's smart for all of them. Before each shift, the driver walks around the truck checking tire condition, lights, fluid leaks, and obvious damage. It takes two minutes and catches problems before they become roadside breakdowns.

4. Tire Pressure Above Almost Everything

Underinflated tires on a work truck wear out fast, hurt fuel economy, and increase the risk of a blowout when loaded. Check pressures weekly, not monthly. Cold morning checks before the trucks start their day are most accurate.

5. Build a Relationship With One Shop

Bouncing between shops costs you continuity. A shop that knows your fleet β€” knows that the white van pulls left, knows that the F-250 needs new front brakes every 25,000 miles β€” catches problems faster and quotes more accurately. Most shops also offer fleet pricing and prioritized service for regular commercial customers.

Roadside Service for When Things Go Wrong

Even with great maintenance, breakdowns happen. Flat tires, dead batteries, fuel runs dry. When a work truck goes down on a job site, you need fast roadside service that handles commercial vehicles.
